      Irish EU’s ‘worst binge-drinkers’

Binge-drinking is defined as having five or more alcoholic drinks in one sitting
Ireland has the highest rates of binge-drinking in the European Union, a survey exploring attitudes to alcohol has indicated.

Finland and Britain came second and third in the Eurobarometer survey.

In Italy and Greece, by comparison, only 2% of people said they did binge-drink – defined as having five or more alcoholic drinks in one sitting.

The survey comes just a few days before Ireland, and much of the world, celebrates Saint Patrick’s Day.

      BINGE-DRINKING IN THE EU
      Ireland 34%
      Finland 27%
      UK 24%
      Denmark 23%
      Portugal 4%
      Italy & Greece 2%

Pfft, all that shows is that we’re more honest than our European brethren. ;)

You’ve not lived in Europe have you?

      We are extremely bad!

Erm, I guess congrats are in order. Nothing like having a stereotype backed up by an official EU survey!

Do the Irish media make a big deal out of binge drinking? I’m sure Bertie couldn’t have made more of a mess than Blair has.

I was in Venice for a few days last week, really hard to find a bar, mostly wine bars that close at 11

I thought we did live in europe…oh you mean continental europe!

European heavy drinking hotspots – eastern Spain, south-western Portugal, northern Italy, south-eastern Germany (and Berlin), coastal low countries, the Danish islands, central Poland (and Gdansk), Prague Bratislava and Budapest (capitals of Czech, Slovakia and Hungary), the Aegean coast, the Greek islands, south of France and Corsica, Russia (the european part). Among others.

One thing about being Irish is that drinking is a regular topic of conversation with other nationalities, and you get to find out where you should go to get drunk. I guess that says as much as a survey – reputation, reputation, reputation!

Really hard to find anything in venice, except over-priced food and canals. Bars open late at the Piazzo Rialto…

Drinking, like smoking, makes you big, clever and cool.

I have been to Prague, Bratislava and Budapest and yes there are more drinking places there an your normal European places, its nothing like the "every 3rd building is a pub" you have hear. In Prague they have strict rules about noise, singing in the pub is not allowed.

Nah, my main problem is more to do with what they consider a "sitting" and in turn what they then consider binge drinking. I’m saying that its not a problem but given that a "sitting" may be considered a night out which could be from 9pm to 3am, having 5 drinks isn’t that big a deal in my opinion.

Exactly, and that’s hardly THAT bad for you if you are only doing it 2-3 times a week max

But 5 drinks quickly becomes more and more. I would consider 5 pints in one night a reasonable amount. I’m not exactly a big drinker but its all too easy to just go with the flow and pay for it the next morning.

The medically recommended units of alcohol per week is 14 for women and 21 for men. How do you compare?
Plus…this is an english site, where spirits are smaller measures in most cases…

yeah over 5 units in one "session" is binge drinking, and 1 pint is between 1.5-2.0 units I think. so 3+ pints is binge drinking……

      no more drugs or alcohol.
No more stinkin fun at all!!

Surely the medically recommended units of alcohol a week is 0?

But surely body mass and height, weight, age, metabolism etc. has a huge effect on the outcome of "binge drinking" a few times a week
