gd.ie updated our listing of game courses and training on the island as of January 2015.
We are not promoting them….just listing them…

Aphra KKeymasterGreat news….
We should do up a news post on this…

Aphra KKeymasterSome companies offer internships, some outsource, and if you already have a degree in computer science and job experience I would be highlighting that!
the next Gamecraft on the island is up in Belfast….sometimes they run buses up from dublin – depends on demand.
Keep an eye out for DubLudo events too – more design focused but you will get some sense of what is going on in the indie scene.

Aphra KKeymasterYes it is quite tough at the moment – even for folks coming out with degrees.
I would recommend going to some of the Gamecraft events to get to know people and some of what is going on.
As regards courses it kind of depends what area you are thinking of heading into – programming versus more design/art orientated.
You can search our database for courses at different levels and in different locations. Some are short intro level courses while others are full degrees – obviously very different offerings. Some of the folks at Gamecraft will have done some of them so that is an opportunity to discuss.
Finally, working on a portfolio as you get better with your skills is always useful.
Good luck

Aphra KKeymasterThat is a great lineup – well done!
Aphra
Aphra KKeymasterI think that sounds like a useful suggestion given where you are located.
I think you should discuss with your tutor if a company is willing to do this.

Aphra KKeymasterDavid,
Thanks for sharing with us.
I hope it is going well and if you want to do a write up on the developing your game experience do get in touch… (same for other folks!)

Aphra KKeymasterI have merged these two topics as you are both from the Cavan institute and both looking for work experience.
My advice from before still stands.

Aphra KKeymasterYou are probably looking for something local? Are you in a position to spend time with family or friends in Dublin, Galway, Derry/L’Derry or Belfast for example?
As a last resort I wonder would working on a team at a coderdojo event or something like the global games jam be sufficient in lieu of companies in your area? Just check the age requirements…

Aphra KKeymasterHappy to announce our new database of game related educational courses and training. Just in time for some serious deadlines.
This actually became quite a big job and we haven’t finished all the formatting…so bear with us.
Hopefully this is use as an overview of the sector and what is available.
If you have a course and it is missing let us know…[a few of the newer ones have to be added I think]
If you spot mistakes let us know…
Thanks to our volunteers and to K. Vesikko for their hard work.

Aphra KKeymasterSince we are heading into the CAO season again I am going to bump this up.
I am starting to get emails via the site asking some questions re courses.
We will get our database of courses (currently 140 of them!) back on stream asap and then start posting some answers here. We don’t make recommendations though….

Core questions to ask yourself/son or daughter..
1. Art/design or programming/tech type course
2. Part time/full time
3. Any prior experience
4. Level – diploma, degree, beyond?
5. Any preferences re location16/12/2014 at 12:00 pm in reply to: Irish Game Dev Christmas party (18/12) @ The Workman's Club #104246Aphra KKeymasterWell because this event was announced on FB there was not much point in having a separate gd.ie shindig – so we are just going along to the Workmans. Vicky cross posted the event here so we are promoting it also. It is open to all.
Actually we usually don’t have a formal gd.ie one in Dec – since it is hard to coordinate with all the other events going on…
but if people throw out dates of when they are home, we are happy to try and coordinate something..
