Aphra KKeymasterwell I will bring it up at the next committee meeting. The general chapter meetings are more events but posting ideas here or to the IGDA thread are a good way to start a discussion. You don’t have to be a member to attend IGDA meetings or to post ideas to the IGDA thread and at this stage we all have a stake in improving things so the more help and volunteers the better.
If you have a few minutes you might scan the Department of Education website and see who is repsonsible for producing careers leaflets etc. that go to secondary schools – maybe we can identify someone we can work with on this…

Aphra KKeymasterI’ve had a few e-mails from career guidance councellors and indeed it is something that we should look at – even an information sheet to career guidance officers and links to the site for info on courses.
Also there is some good literature from the US and the UK skills bodies which give detailed job descriptions and the skills needed for them..as a first step these should be probably put up on this site…I came across them when I was doing some contract work for FAS..
am I talking myself into more work here??
let me bring it up at the next IGDA chapter committee meeting…

Aphra KKeymasterit is interesting that this year sees DCU’s journalism courses turning 21 years and also this year our first crop of undergraduates hit the market so there will be even more competition for the available journo jobs..
I have tried e-mailing the class journalism lists to recruit people to write about games but they don’t seem to think this will necessarily get them a job post-college and you can’t blame them when you scan the national print and broadcast media..the one I did recruit wrote one feature and left for Japan..

Aphra KKeymasterwell you know there was an Official PlayStation Ireland magazine a couple of years ago. It closed but my understanding is that it was closed because it was badly run rather than not profitable, and Sony were talking about relaunching it with another publishing house…
so there is probably scope for an Irish games magazine of good quality – but we’d still like you to write for us too!
Ronny, after your exams you might consider writing for us too…

Aphra KKeymasterapparently KGDI are going to host a mini-GDC in Oct time in Korea, they have 20,000 game developers, are taking 15 companies to promote them at E3, are rolling out very fast ADSL around the country cause ordinary ADSL has almost 70 percent penetration – to the home –
would make you a bit green wouldn’t it!
check out the Korean White paper on their website under information..

Aphra KKeymasterof course according to Sony the PSP is not competing against the other existing handhelds as they are creating a new type of device…this new announcement adds a bit of spice to the handheld market..

Aphra KKeymasterRonny I haven’t had a chance to read through the reviews yet, I will soon, but I think it is interesting to compare different reviewing styles operated in different magazines. Are these styles laid down by the magazine or can the individual sell their own style.. Many reviews I read tell me nothing useful about a game at all.. or at least nothing that I would use to evaluate a game..which is why most people, and I, rely on word of mouth …
