We’ve reviewed the Multimedia courses in DCU, Trinity and Dun Laoghaire on this site. See http://www.gamedevelopers.ie/resources/courses/

They are all introducing more 3D but it varies from course to course so you need to compare carefully..and ask Qs re how many software icenses they have to see if students actually get access to the software or only get to ‘see’ it..

Otherwise Ballyfermot Senior College in Dublin has animation specific courses which a few people on these boards have done and are more informed on than I. We’ve reviewed them on this site too…

Dundalk IT have multimedia courses too…not sure about CIT and WIT..

Thanks for the nominations so far but in relation to the GD of the year award really the GD award cannot go to me..

it should go to someone who has made a special effort to make the shindigs and is a regular on the forum and helping to grow the industry and the community. As the organiser of the awards I have to be exempt..so please nominate someone else…

I won’t have a hockey game the next day so you can buy me a pint instead!!

I’ve been talking to both Mahaffys and Toners about being the venue for the birthday shindig.

Why change the venue you ask? Well the first shindig was in Toners and as it turns out they are willing to reserve tables downstairs for us from 7pm. Mahaffys can only keep tables for us if we arrive around 6pm which I think might be a bit much to expect for people travelling from outside Dublin..

so if people don’t object I was going to book tables downstairs in Toners on Baggott Street, again centre of Dublin, for the 2nd of April shindig…

maps and directions will follow in a mail and on the calendar..

now all we need are nominations via the website or by e-mail to me…

and suggestions/volunteers for sponsorship for awards..

Some of you already know that I am hoping to give out a small number of awards on the 2nd of April as a token of our appreciation for all the inputs and assistance I’ve had over the past year. Ian has suggested we call them the ‘GDs’!

We are hoping to have five categories; tentative names follow, feel free to make your own suggestions as to what each award should be called.

    1. Stamina award
The person who signed up to the forums near the very beginning and is still posting…

    2. Sprint award
The person who has recently registered but is furiously posting and rapidly moving up the posting ladder

    3. Humour award
The funniest post on the boards…we’ll be taking nominations on this…

    4. Salmon of knowledge..
The most informative/useful post ..we’ll be taking nominations on this one too…

    5. ‘GD’ of the year….
The most significant, useful, funny presence on the boards and at the shindigs over the past year – apart from my good self of course! Make your nomations through this thread please …

You can post your nominations here and the closing date will be Friday the 26th of March. Then a high quality jury consisting of myself, Padraig Murphy aka Hamish here in DCU, and a neutral other who I still have to recruit..will make the final decisions…

still time of course to make witty, intelligent posts and lobby the jury!!

and to add the ole academic view..which I have discussed with Dave in a pub sometime too…

there is an entire sub-discipline within economics called innovation studies and innovation is also studied within sociology..recent work would suggest that innovation which usually attached to ‘something new’ can mean both radical innovations (something newly introduced to a marketplace) and incremental innovations (a slight improvement on something else)… in some studies incremental innovations can mean one is adjusting the product/service to the marketplace and can result in better sales..one could I guess look at games which are serialised and released each year with only slight adjustments in this light…

Innovation, in theoretical terms, is also not just applied to technical or content innovations because it is now recognised that innovative marketing and organisational structures can also contribute to success in the marketplace..so while popular and in many cases political discussion of innovation often limits it to technical or content innovations, this application of the term is not used in academic circles..

in this context an idea is not an innovation..only when it gets made into something can it be called an innovation…

and then there are the theories about national, regional and international systems of innovation..but that is for another day…

apparently there is now a federal association of game developers’ in Germany. I have my German scholars working on a translation of the press release but it seems the companies have come together to promote the industry nationally and make links internationally. will let you know more when I do..

hey Mark..I’m trying to get them into the country, not out…

..you might be interested in this news…from Professional Ireland

‘In other broadband news, both Esat BT and UTV Internet have
reduced their monthly rates, to less than EU30 in the latter case.
    For a flat EU29.99, following a EU99 set-up fee, consumers and
businesses can avail of UTV Internet’s DSL service, Clicksilver.
Esat BT has cut the price of its DSL offering to EU33.15 for
subscribers to its telephone service and EU39 for standalone
customers. These cuts follow the recent reduction by Eircom of the wholesale fees it charges other operators to use its network.’

not sure about geographical availability on these services though..

does anyone know anything about this crowd?
