well I know some ex Multimedia students in DCU who ended up teaching games related stuff and did projects in their course on games so they had related projects for a portfolio.
Multimedia courses are generally what they say they are and do not tend to be games related, although you might have room to do game related projects..
I would suggest you look at the scope to exploit courses and projects in your current course while also building a portfolio. Generally multimedia courses are great to learn the basics of quick downloadable games or mobile games and that is certainly a good area to start given your background.
You could think about using this site to recruit a team for the Dare to be Digital competition .. that would be one way to work with a team and show your stripes in game design
Then maybe think about transferring to another course or doing a postgraduate course…but you may not need to leave to achieve what you want to achieve.
just some thoughts…
actually I thought there were a few people into games and teaching games in WIT?

Aphra KKeymasteryour points are well taken Roganski and have been made to the relevant agencies, some of whom are only too well aware of how difficult it is in the business.
however that is no reason not to support those companies who exist and to try and develop new companies.
as for all the courses popping up in colleges – that is a rather more political question driven in part by falling student nos in computer courses and in part by overly enthusiastic reports..the demand is certainly there from students too..we would hope the courses make realistic claims to your students rather than promise them jobs..
some on these boards are working in the UK already and if nothing else people on the boards do actually inject some realism into the proceedings
oh and we are glad you found us!

Aphra KKeymasternow Ronny you don’t want to open that can of worms!
when they get decentralisation going anything could happen…!

Aphra KKeymasterusually if the idea is very good you can get the company to sign a ‘non-disclosure agreement’ or NDA before you discuss the idea in detail.
otherwise you might think of going the indie route and getting a team together to develop it yourself and then sell it on…
lots of options and much depends on, as Dave noted, your skills, background and liquidity (i.e. can you get cash together yourself)

Aphra KKeymasterthanks guys,
amazing when you look back to find things were ticking along and getting done during the year but maybe with somewhat less publicity. It is good to gather them together and reflect at some point during the year. If we missed anything major let me know.
this year we will have the third gd.ie birthday event and another awakenings to look forward to as well as the Dare competition and the launch of the new digital media research centre. Hopefully we will be able to highlight company news too as it happens so please do keep sending in press releases and snippets to us.
