Aphra KKeymasterHi Omen,
well the DTI report I mentioned elsewhere in the forums says the most comprehensive UK data is Chart-Track data..heavily discounted to ELSPA members… so if you can find one..
They state there is no global market data..but they mention the following as country/region specific sources of info – GfK for the UK/Europe and the CESA white paper for Japan and NPD for the US.
Full report on the competitiveness of the UK games industry from the Department of Trade and Industry website..
What is the competition being run in Scotland?

Aphra KKeymasterHi John,
I’ve asked Roddy, our resident film expert here in DCU, to see about comparisons with the film industry!

Aphra KKeymasterHi all,
INVENT, the business innovation centre in DCU holds monthly events where guest speakers talk about their experiences establishing a company etc.
The April session of invent’s monthly Entrepreneurs Network Events will
take place on Wednesday 30 April @ 6.30pm in invent. The Speaker is Joe Rowley, MD AGB Scientific Ltd and his topic is building a successful company.
Joe Rowley set up AGB Scientific while still an undergraduate at UCD.
According to the release I was sent ‘AGB Scientific is Ireland’s largest supplier of laboratory
instrumentation, equipment, consumables and expertise, representing some
of the world’s major equipment manufacturers. ‘You can find more info on this on invent’s site
It is not exactly a games company but I am sure the business expertise is just what start-ups need.

Aphra KKeymasterThanks Omen for that. I know one of the present Ballyfermot crew is hoping to head off to Abertay next year. So links may be developing organically already.
In the absence of such courses in Ireland take a look at what a student society can do. The University of Texas at Austin has as a very active student-run club called EGaDS (Electronic Game Developers Society). Have a look at their site.
In addition the IDGA has been developing curriculum guidelines for game development and game studies courses.

Aphra KKeymasterHi all,
We have had some useful feedback on the site and John and Paul have been working hard to tweak things.
In particular people entering their names into the skills directory can now be listed as company, student or freelance.
You can also choose to be listed under more than one skill area. If you want to make adjustments to an existing entry please feel free to resend your details and I will delete the old one.

Aphra KKeymasterHi all,
Someone-mailed me from the MSc in Abertay and told me they have ten students of which six are Irish! I wonder how many more Irish people are over training in the UK.
The question then arises – should we have a games specific degree course here in Ireland?
Some might argue we would only be training people to go abroad to work. Another viewpoint is that having a degree course here would help to stimulate the industry.
What does anyone think?

Aphra KKeymasterHi all,
Nice to see we have got a write up on http://www.gamesindustry.biz/
It is a pretty useful site in relation to industry developments if you don’t already know about it.

Aphra KKeymasterThanks ThrAx,
We have listed what courses we have found to date – including those two BCFE courses – in the resources/courses section of this website.
As people make us aware of others, or modules in non-games specific courses that are useful, we will add them to the website.

Aphra KKeymasterHi all,
Nice to see people I know and some I don’t know posting here. Already there are great suggestions for improvements coming in so be patient and we will see what we can do about them.
Just a note to say we hope to have a face to face launch this month so I will let you know when plans are in place for that.
Until then..
Aphra.
