Jamie McKeymaster156 now!
Yeah, I’ve gotten about ten messages now with updates, thanks all!
Anyone know what the craic is in cork? And can someone confirm Galway is covered too?
I want to speak to everyone on this list, whether through events, post survey, email survey or Skype call to go through a survey bigger than before.
I’ve had contributions from lots of people, but if you’d like to have a question considered to be asked in the survey, please add it here, or pm/tweet it to me.
Cut off date is June 14th.
Cheers
Jamie
Jamie McKeymasterThanks for the info, the report covers service providers, and other games related businesses, but if you have a contact there, let me know.
Cheers
Jamie

Jamie McKeymastermaybe do something constructive and agree what is and isn’t allowed, ie active members of the community working in the irish game development scene, and then third parties such as recruitment agencies, and a process/approval for them to go through, and possibly a nominal donation towards costs?
the jobs listings are one thing, but forum posts, especially in the case where they haven’t introduced themselves first, are another.
Jamie McKeymasterI agree too, there are plenty of ways to reach our users without having to post here, and to be honest if Riot wanted to advertise their jobs here directly, they know that they could do so for free and not have to worry about fees and commissions via a recruiter.
We’ve kept recruiters away from the forums for a long time, and if we let one recruiter on the forums do this, every single other one will follow quickly, and we have gotten through ten years without having anything to do with gambling on this forum, and I’d like to keep it that way.
An alternate for GD.ie is to charge a modest fee for posting a listing on the site, recruitment companies have to pay to get their jobs up on irishjobs.ie etc and they’re making between 10% and 20% of the annual salary of the person they’re placing (so if the job is 30k, they get 3k or 6k commission for the placement).
With this in mind, if the company is a member of the community, it should be free to post as many jobs (especially if a GD.ie member has a realistic change of getting it) as they want for free, but if the person is from a 3rd party who is going to make a profit out of a placement they source via GD.ie, then a nominal fee (towards the food at the next shindig, server costs etc) should be in place.
After all, it’s one of the most targeted places on the net for the Irish game development community, and a PayPal charge would be fair.
Just my 2c

I completely agree with dualtagh on this one, prospective employers when you get to the other end of your course will be more interested in seeing your portfolio than your paper qualifications. If you’re doing a games course, but show that you haven’t bothered to follow it up in your spare time, the jobs will go to people who have, not you.
Get involved with mods, a dev team working on a part-time project, college projects with the lies of Imagine Cup, GamesFleadh etc, and do things in your own time.
If you just do the basics through college, at the other end you’ll be struggling to find work. However, if you have a couple of projects that you are working on, you may find that you can have a job lined up before you have even finished the course in two years time.

Jamie McKeymasterJamie McKeymasterPeople cut back in non-essential areas, but will always retain a primary hobby ;p
I think the green and red bars would have only really to begin to separate from about 2009 anyway, as app stores, free to play, dlc became more bedded in. So people spend about the same amount, just differently.
Jamie McKeymasterThe trend is always the same
Just remember the lifecycle of console (which drives the retail sales)
First year – Full price console at pioneers, early adopters plus games at full price
Second year, full price, but with early mass market following, and bigger range of games coming out to drive the sales
Third year on, price of console starts to drop, games come out on platinum etc, and these latecomers also generally buy fewer games compared to more enthusiastic fans early on.
But what’ll be interesting is what year 1 and 2 of the next console phase.
So anyway, I’ve put together a graph. Just remember, red = actual sales through the till, green includes estimates for the stuff that doesn’t. VAT would only ever be calculated off the red one.
Jamie McKeymasterWhen?
We have a breakout room in our office I’m sure I could get permission for them to use. Might also be able to get some of our senior staff who have worked across the industry (ie ubisoft, ncsoft and lots more) to offer some advice too.
