Jamie McKeymaster
well it’s definitely not a jolt/game/popcap situation if that’s what any of you are thinking, business continues as usual!
Jamie McKeymasterWhat I think is more important when doing a course is looking at what software or languages they’re teaching.
DIT will be moving to a bigger campus in the coming years (although they’ve been saying that when I was there 2001-2005) but for the moment Kevin Street is where the game dev courses are.
Cost of living around there if you move into town isn’t bad, as long as you stay away from the expensive convenience stores, courses in DIT are generally more practical & hands on, and many of the courses have organised placements. It also runs stateofplay.ie and has Hugh and Bryan there who are top notch.
There are a couple of cons, if you’re into sports, DIT hasn’t got a big campus like UCD does or many sports facilities (although Kevin St does have a pool), and you’d probably be moving between kevin street and aungier street (200m). You do have Camden Street and all of town at your doorstep for going out, and I had a great time there, both in the social and academic side.
As for whether it’s the "prestige" of UCD being better known internationally, the games industry is a meritocracy, just pick the course that most closely matches what you’re good at, or want to learn, and choose that over a name. At the end of the day, completion of any course shows an employer that you’re capable of learning to a certain standard with expectations of improving from there, and you’ll be trained up in a particular direction once you get your foot on the ladder. The degree is rarely the be-all and end all. Showing that you’ve been working on projects through college and getting a 2.2 at the end is as likely to get you a job on the other end than having a 1st class honour, but no real-world experience.
Hope this helps!
Jamie McKeymasterFair enough, maybe minutes of the meeting could be released then to let people know what was brought up instead?
I should be grand that date to attend, if anyone has questions or is looking for specific marketing/pr/distribution/international markets advice, if i can help, I will!
Jamie McKeymastercan you bring mic’s and cameras so we can record it too?
Jamie McKeymasterHi all,
Aphra will have an update on this shortly, the problem beforehand was a lack of manpower to overhaul the site, but there are volunteers now which mean that we can do this kind of stuff within GD.ie going forward.
Remember the site was coded a decade ago, pre-social media, and it’s run by volunteers :)
What we don’t want to have happen is that the community gets fragmented, and if you’re happy to maybe include this kind of stuff as part of GD.ie, I’m sure Aphra has few if any objections.
It’s great that you’re doing these things (podcast, event planner etc), so maybe come under the GD.ie umbrella for it, knowing that change will be happening soon?
Thanks
Jamie
Jamie McKeymastermaybe set up a paypal donate option to get some funds together?
Jamie McKeymasteryou back in ireland yet?
Jamie McKeymasterYep, they’re based down in Thurles in the facilities near Phil
Jamie McKeymastergreat fun, simple but fun gameplay, and just when you thought it was becoming easy, the walls appear.
tried this on both an android phone and tablet, if you could add a use of the tilt, and then a button to lock down an angle, or alternatively have a little semicircle around the shooter bit which you can use to aim that’s about the only suggestions I can offer.
also, on the options screen add a link to review the game, and the name of your development team and links.
cheers
jamie
great fun!
Jamie McKeymasterI’ll add it into the registration form for the 2013 report I’m doing up at the moment, if you have a look at the timeline above the footer at http://www.connectireland.com/ , i’m thinking something like this would work really well :)
Jamie McKeymasterHi Aphra,
The meeting in December was not a GamesIreland meeting, it was a meeting of the Clustering Development Team, and I had raised the point that it wasn’t very representative of the industry if GD.ie, the academics training people in games, or any of the indies who aren’t covered by GI were excluded, so it’s good to see that there is some movement there.
I never received the minutes as I’m not formally involved and had been invited to present the results of the report, but at least there is an interest at government and agency level to push the games industry.
Thanks
Jamie
Jamie McKeymasterThanks Hugh,
Watching them now at http://www.livestream.com/stateofplay/ :)
Jamie McKeymastervbulletin! if it works for boards, it’ll work for us! And it has a lot of extra functionality. It’s paid for, but it’s worth it! We evaluated a load of forum software for Age of Wulin, and it came up trumps. There are also tons of extensions you can get for it.
Should be able to import PHPBB (this forum) according to http://www.v7n.com/forums/forum-management/217933-phpbb3-database-move-vbulletin.html
As for the CMS, probably wordpress would be the best bet, it’s very easy to use and very easy to set up.
my 2c :)
Jamie McKeymasterThere’s a nice photo gallery up, including a pretty decent photo at http://entertainment.ie/photos/GAME-The-Future-of-Play/3418.htm#!img=9
Thanks again to everyone who helped make the report happen.
Cheers
Jamie
Jamie McKeymasterGlad you had a constructive time, I’ve set up a thread for the Enterprise Ireland talk over at https://gamedevelopers.ie/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6930 including the file that Linda presented
