The School of Computer Science, TU Dublin, has a position available for a Research Assistant in games development for the Arithmos project funded by the Irish Research Council.

Arithmos investigates how digital game-based learning can reduce the negative effects of Maths Anxiety on Primary School pupils. The project will design and implement novel adaptive and anxiety-aware educational games and evaluate them during two cycles of in-school randomized control trials. Arithmos includes activities to support our technology-based intervention, including workshops for teachers to facilitate their adoption of game-based learning and multimedia information material for children and parents. This two-year project is funded by the Irish Research Council (IRC) and will be supervised by Dr. Pierpaolo Dondio at Technological University Dublin and Dr. Flavia H. Santos at University College Dublin.

We are currently looking for a research assistant with experience in coding and passionate for video games. The ideal candidate would be a passionate programmer with experience in any of the following: Javascript, node js, web-development, mobile development. Familiarity with game frameworks such as Unity is an advantage, but it is not required. Other programming languages could be considered.

A game prototype has already been developed. The game is a digital card game that can be played against a computer player or against another player over the network. The current prototype is written in Javascript and PhP. The aim of the project is to expand (or redevelop) the existing game and make it more robust and reliable. A core component of the game that have to be developed are a new network engine to support multi-player gameplay.

Candidate profile:

  • A degree in Computer Science
  • 2-year experience in coding in language such as Javascript, node js, PhP, mobile development. Other programming language could be considered
  • Experience with game frameworks such as Unity is an advantage
  • Experience in game design and/or development is an advantage
  • Experience in software testing and documentation is an advantage

Skills and Abilities:

  • The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills, time management and ability to undertake duties assigned and meet deadlines required.

Role – Details and Duties

  • Work closely and maintain a high level of communication with the Network Manager and the Network Director to achieve objectives of the organisation for the benefit of members.

Assistant Professor in Film (computer game narratives) Dublin

The Discipline of Film, School of Creative Arts at Trinity College Dublin invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Film.

The appointment responds to specific needs identified in a series of reports including the Department of Education and Skills Action Plan, ‘Technology Skills 2022’, and the Olsberg Report (‘Economic Analysis of the Audiovisual Sector in the Republic of Ireland’) both of which listed Gaming as a priority area in the future world of work. It will develop the Department of Film’s own teaching in this area, currently one dedicated module on the new ‘Screenwriting’ strand in the M.Phil. in Film Studies.

Salary: Appointment will be made on the Lecturer Salary Scale at a point in line with Government Pay Policy [€35,509 to €86,247 per annum, pro-rata at 0.5FTE]. Appointment will be made no higher than point 8 (i.e. €50,410).
